A. Assess and Track the State of Staff Development at the Library

• met with Staff Development Coordinating Committee, reviewed previous training surveys and minutes [2005]
• met with Technology Training Coordinators [2006]
• created and distributed training needs survey for library administration. Administration identified three top training needs: (1) setting priorities/goals; (2) customer service skills; and (3) service assessment. [2006]
• created and distributed training needs survey for all library staff. Library staff identified communication skills, customer service skills, setting priorities/goals, time management and teamwork as needs. [2007]
• conducted a literature review on learning organizations; met with faculty whose focus is learning organizations [2005,2006]
• created a statement on the importance of staff development from administration to add to Staffweb [2006]

B. Identify System-Wide Training and Development Opportunities and Oversee Training

reviewed our use of ElementK online training and determined that we would make better use of our funds with in-person training; Usage data also suggested that top technology skill needs among staff to be Dreamweaver training; Library Administration also identified Outlook training as a priority. [2007]
• offered meeting management training; created a reference library for meeting management, including materials and staff who can conduct ongoing training in these areas [2007]
• organized project management training for 30 supervisors and for library staff serving on committees and teams; Project management templates were posted to the Staffnews Training and Development pages. This training addressed the need identified in strategic planning. [2007]
• organized a brown bag, front line training for 58 library staff and an open house for the DiscoverLibrary roll out. [2008]
• organized basic and advanced Dreamweaver training for 63 library staff; This training addressed technology skills identified in the ElementK assessment. [2008]
• organized Outlook training for 46 library staff and created a web page of resources for users. This training supported the library's migration to Outlook and addressed a need identified by library administration. [2008]
• organized fire extinguisher training for library staff; This need was identified by the Disaster Preparedness Project Team. [2008]

C. Encourage Communication and Collaboration among Departmental Units and Groups

• created a training checklist for new employees to support consistency in staff orientation and training [2006]
revised the Training pages on the StaffWeb to give staff easy access to our online training resources as well as free or modestly expensive resources for training. [2007]
• created guidelines for a fund for library staff development [2007]
• Gathered information on mentoring programs [2007]

D. Recognize Staff Achievements

• organized the Spring Staff Picnic for all library staff; Approximately 200 staff and family members attended the event. [each year]
• created online Acorn Note form [in progress 2008]
