Bibliographic Management Software

Topic: a discussion about bibliographic management software (EndNote, etc.)

Attendees (12):

Chris Benda (discussion leader), Patty Lee, Joell Smith-Borne, Peter Brush, Sue Widmer, Ramona Romero, Jim Kelly, Amy Stewart-Mailhiot, Jodie Gambill, Aama Nahuja, Amy Dumouchel, Sue Erickson (scribe)

Tips:

To use EndNote for collaborative projects, the project must be on a server and one person needs to control the document.

Zotero does not work IE, but it works in Firefox (no one knew whether it works with Safari)

Eskind started with Reference Manager at least 11 years ago. Their faculty members are involved in lots of co-authoring and co-editing and use EndNote for manuscript preparation. Patty meets with faculty individually and asks each of them to train others in their departments. She helps each faculty member she meets with set up the initial database in EndNote and often follows up by phone for troubleshooting. Eskind has also started to do some work in EndNote Web with the distance education students in Nursing.

Chris has mostly dealt with individuals too, primarily graduate students.

Amy Dumouchel has given instruction sessions for small groups.

At the Law Library, there may be differences in product preference depending on which database is preferred (Lexis works better with one, Westlaw with another).

Chris has conducted a survey of Divinity students and faculty asking about which software are using. If you’re interested in adapting his survey for your library, contact Chris.

Several small groups were formed to address different pieces of this puzzle:

Ramona, Chris, Joell and Nahuja will get up to speed on EndNote Web and will offer some kind of training for the rest of us.

Likewise, Amy Dumouchel and Nahuja (and later Eli Moody was added) will look at Zotero and offer some kind of introductory session for it.

Sue mentioned that the Writing Studio is interested in working with the library to collaborate on workshops. Ramona, Amy Dumouchel and Amy Stewart-Mailhiot expressed interest in this and since then Sue has scheduled a meeting with the Writing Studio and Ramona, Amy D., Amy S., Deborah Lilton, Lee Ann Lannom, Leslie Foutch, and Sara Beutter.

If you are interested in participating in any of the above projects, please contact Sue Erickson.
