Agenda

When ACORN titles do not have an ISSN, the SFX button does not appear. The SFX team has proposed that when there is not an ISSN for an electronic title, the SFX button would appear and a title search would be executed. If the title is a generic one, e.g., "proceedings", the result could be multiple hits. In discussing this change, it seemed like it would be more likely to help than hurt. Please see http://sfx.library.vanderbilt.edu/vu?sid=ACORN:ACORN&title=Capital+defense+journal&genre=journal
as an example of a desirable result. And, see http://sfx.library.vanderbilt.edu/vu/cgi/core/multi.cgi?sfx.request_id=616103 as a possible result of a title "Proceedings"
  • Open URL page
Please review the Open URL generator webpage. Wording has been changed and generation improved. http://sfx.library.vanderbilt.edu/sfxtst3/cgi/core/openurl-generator.cgi

Meeting Notes from Amy Limpitlaw

Present: Jason Battles, Melinda Brown, Sue Erickson, Cindy Franco, Teresa Gray, Amy Limpitlaw, Kitty Porter, Robert Rich, Flo Wilson. Absent: David Carpenter, Leslie Foutch, Amia Baker

Reference Forum convenor: Flo asked Sue if she would continue for another year as the Reference Forum convenor, since the forum got a somewhat late start. Sue agreed, and asked if the other members of the forum planning group would be willing to stay on. Those who were at the meeting (Kitty and Amy) agreed.

Reference Forum update: Sue spoke about the last discussion held by the Reference Forum which was on the topic of making the library a welcoming place, and was led by Amia. She passed out a spreadsheet listing all the forums and demonstrations held by forum over the past year, along with proposed topics for future forums.

Information Literacy update: Melinda spoke about the recent meeting on September 12 to discuss information literacy initiatives on campus. The meeting was attended by a staff member from nearly all the campus libraries, with the exception of law and biomedical. Also in attendance were representatives from the Writing Studio, the Center for Teaching, and the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Sharon Weiner from Peabody gave a presentation on information literacy projects at Peabody, and Melinda passed out the outline Sharon had distributed at the meeting. It was decided that there should be created a working group for those interested in undergraduate research issues, to meet on a regular basis. Melinda had agreed to be the convenor of this group. There was also interest in a similar group focused on graduate research, which LeeAnn Lanom agreed to convene. In line with information literacy initiatives, Cindy spoke briefly about plans for the implementation of pilot anti-plagiarism software.

Suggestion for forum podcasts: The group discussed Kitty’s proposal to record the reference forums as podcasts, to be made available to the rest of the library staff. Most felt that this might inhibit participants during a forum discussion, but might be feasible for forum demonstrations.

ICPSR records for ACORN: Sue spoke about the Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) which is a data archive. The ICPSR is planning on creating MARC records for their studies. Sue asked whether we should import these records into the ACORN catalog. One problem is that users will need to understand the software required to read these records, which is available at the University computing center, but not on library workstations. The inclusion of these records in the ACORN catalog will allow for more researchers to be aware of their existence, but may prove confusing to those who are unfamiliar with the datasets. The possibility of providing access to this data through Primo, rather than directly through ACORN, was discussed. It was decided to wait until we know more about the records and what information will be provided before making a decision to import them into to the ACORN catalog.

Primo update and testing schedule: Flo reported that plans for Primo are advancing on schedule. There will be meetings with representatives from Ex Libris in November, and beta testing is scheduled for early January. The teams for mapping and for getting information out of ACORN into Primo are making progress, as are the two Getit teams. Jason explained about Getit and spoke about how the two teams are proceeding.

SFX matters

How SFX works: Flo raised the issue of holding an information session on the mechanics behind SFX, possibly as a reference forum. Flo will check with Jody about doing an instructional session on this topic.
ISSN/Title change: The proposed change in SFX for searching on items that don’t have ISSN’s was discussed. Currently, if an item has an ISSN, SFX will search on the ISSN number. When a title in ACORN does not have an ISSN, the SFX button does not appear, even if the title is available electronically. The SFX team has proposed that when there is not an ISSN for an electronic title, the SFX button would appear and a title search would be executed. If the title is a generic one, e.g., "proceedings", or “bulletin” the result could be multiple hits. However, this would happen rarely and it seemed that making this change will be more likely to improve access than not. It was decided that this should be implemented, and if problems are encountered, they should be reported to LITS.
Sorting and selection of targets: The group discussed the possibility of whether it is possible to order the targets in SFX so that preferred targets are at the top of the list. No decisions were made on this, but this may be something that Primo will help resolve. The group also discussed the distinction between problems that need to be fixed with SFX and decisions that need to be made concerning how SFX should work.

Open URL page: Cindy spoke about some proposed changes to the Open URL generator page. It is not entirely clear or user-friendly, and she proposed using the model provided by the library at Cal State Fullerton, http://library.fullerton.edu/librarytoolkit/default.shtml.

Google: It was reported that a decision was made to add a link to Google Scholar to the Heard list of databases, as a general database.

Facebook, Second Life: There was discussion of putting ads for the library on Facebook, Second Life or other online community sites. It was proposed that this might be a good topic for one of the Reference Forums. Cindy mentioned using OAK as a tie to these online community sites.
