Agenda
- Writing Studio resources
- Prior to the meeting, Sue sent the group a document from Jen Holt at the Writing Studio that lists all of the handouts that they have on hand. Some are also linked from the “resources” section of their website: http://www.vanderbilt.edu/writing/resources/.
- Notice that they also have a link to “VU library writing links”. Are there guides from your library or department that would be useful to have linked from that page? Are there any print-only handouts you’d like to send to the Writing Studio? Please come prepared to share.
- Guidelines for the creation of online tutorials
- See the second item on our revised goals list: http://wiki.library.vanderbilt.edu/committees/pmwiki.php/RSC/2008-09Goals-Revised.
- Text: Create a procedure for developing tutorials including topic selection; must address diversity issues (who the “people” are if illustrated, citation styles, use the NOTES function for “closed captioning). Also need to build in who will maintain what as far as updating and where we will keep them “stored.”
- If your library/dept has created or talked about creating tutorials, please consult with any involved staff prior to the meeting to bring forward “best practices” for the creation of tutorials.
- GOAL: A set of guidelines at the end of our meeting that can be disseminated to staff and posted as a resource on our wiki.
Minutes (Cindy)
Present: Chris Benda, Melinda Brown, Sue Erickson (Chair), Cindy Franco (Recorder), Jodie Gambill, Stephen Jordan, Julie Loder, Sara Manus, Kitty Porter, Amy Stewart-Mailhiot, Teresa Gray
Absent: Flo Wilson, Leslie Foutch, Rahn Huber
Topics:
- Writing Studio resources
- Several Peabody Library guides are already linked from website. Need to add link tutorials, especially the scholarly vs. popular resources.
- Sara mentioned the Intellectual Property tutorial, but is music specific. She'll send Jen the links to Music's Chicago guide and the intellectual property tutorial.
- Science - no guides of relevance
- Central - Amy will create PDFs of the FYWS handouts (done) and will send to RSC and to Jen Holt. Melinda pointed out the following Writing Studio guides as particularly helpful for library reference and instruction: "Hints for Finding Sources," "Formulating Your Research Question," and "Connecting Research to Your Writing."
- Group was asked to email their resources to Jen directly
- Guidelines for the creation of online tutorials
- Reference to the second item on the goals list as noted above.
- Peabody not present, but provided input prior to the meeting
- Peabody Dean has mandated that Library create tutorial on Excel (3 levels of basic, intermediate, and advanced). Robbi DePeri will be doing the background research/literature review in preparation and she and Leslie will work on the tutorial content when Leslie returns in spring semester. They plan to incorporate a pre- and post-test.
- Celia will work with focus group to develop the tests.
- Guidelines Discussion
- diversity issues need to be addressed
- Are these system-wide tutorials?
- Topic selection, prioritization?
- Need to have an idea of what the learning outcomes before they do the tutorials. Do we have people who can do this? Should this be a team?
- Suggestion to have a workshop for using Camtasia to it's full benefit
- Differences in teaching styles may make tutorials less adaptable to system-wide adoption; how to avoid duplication of content while addressing different approaches to content?
- Need to find common elements and then tailor to individual needs.
- Where would we put these pieces? Public web or just staff? Consensus was just staff right now.
- Some vendors have restrictions as to what you can capture.
- List of resources should include tutorials that are already out there
- Guidelines should include a recommendation to determine whether there are vendor-supplied or in-house tutorials that could be modified or used in lieu of creating new ones from scratch.
- Save projects in multiple pieces so it can be modified by others (ex. database demo separate from the path to get here so that the starting point can be modified to local audience)
- We will start putting things in Google Docs (Sara will initiate this). Jodie will let group know when the instruction section of the new Staffweb will be ready. (Should be by Thanksgiving.)
- Guidelines outline
- Rights issues
- Diversity issues
- Recommendation about length of video tutorials (3-5 minutes, but no more than 7)
- Look for existing tutorial that can be used instead of, or as a starting point
- Limit jargon
- No Time for list of what's going on around system
- Other announcements
- Celia will be temporarily added to group in Leslie's absence
- Discover Library project team is getting ready to do next round of usability testing. Send suggestions of features needing different names/labels to Joell (ex. e-Shelf).
