Minutes: Rahn
July 14, 2008 Agenda: Review and Discuss Goals for 2008/2009 Minutes: Rahn Discussion Highlights:
- Reviewed draft of the RSC Annual Report.
- RSC Charge was updated today on the wiki from the version approved earlier; Sue reviewed it verbally.
- 2008/2009 Goal draft discussion:
• Sue said that the Digital Library team is looking at a content management system and that might help us with creating more web-based content (such as the Instruction materials)
• Sue said that the SDC would like to have an SDC member who also sat on this committee and could share information; Sara is likely to be on the SDC and would be the overlap person
• We would like to work with SDC to identify opportunities (training, coaching) to address the issue of current balancing job responsibilities with new demands – will suggest to SDC that they provide Time Management or other training programs and then RSC will consider how to relate that to reference and instruction via the Forum
2008/2009 Goals as revised:
• Settle on a way to create library subject and course guides and lists of databases – (project team is in place and active)
• Create a procedure for developing tutorials including topic selection; must address diversity issues (who the “people” are if illustrated, citation styles, use the NOTES function for “closed captioning). Also need to build in who will maintain what as far as updating and where we will keep them “stored.”
- Create a procedure for developing system-wide tutorials, including how to prioritize topic selection
- Hold a Reference & Instruction Forum discussion about incorporating DiscoverLibrary into reference & instruction in early August; have an ongoing series of discussions about its use with a goal of developing best practices for its use
- Enhance the Vanderbilt Visions webpage for first-year students: http://www.library.vanderbilt.edu/vv/ (consider Blackboard as an option; use a Project Team to be created this fall)
- Establish a project team to collect selected instructional materials (handouts, online guides, tutorials) and create a structured space on the Heard website to house them on a public website (could be joint team with CUIL, ideas shared about how to approach this project; centered on what the easiest thing is for the Library system to do – create its own site, and CUIL and the Library to point to each other’s links as appropriate); will create Project Team charge to address these issues
- Establish an online "sandbox" for instructional materials that are in-progress so that feedback can be obtained from staff, faculty, and students, and collaboration among library staff fostered (Lower priority, but selection of a content management system may make this a higher priority if it is selected as a pilot project)
- Work with the Staff Development Committee to identify and coordinate training for reference and instruction staff (ongoing)
- Approach CAC about establishing and documenting core customer service values and expectations - Sue will follow-up
- Review content for Guide to Libraries & recommend revisions to the Communications Committee – will do that in January 2009; have already done it for Fall 2008
- Work with the Web Maintenance Team on a system-wide web guide for citation resources and bibliographic management software options. Chris has an EndNote guide. It doesn’t relate to some of the specific programs (ex: Writing Studio). Peabody has tutorials EndNote and for Zotera. Peabody Library has had complaints about not having RefWorks. Style manuals vary between various departments & schools. Priority: Spring 2009.
