Online Demonstrations and Discussions:

The first issue is one that ILL raised to the SFX group. ILL would like to have the ILL option appear for all items, regardless of whether the item is available at VU. This would help patrons who locate an e-book, but would prefer to use a print copy. There is some concern from RSC about what this would mean for articles. We would not want patrons waiting for ILL when they could have gotten the item immediately online. There was also discussion about the second issue, which is how Acorn is being searched from the SFX menu. This raised questions and comments about the SFX menu in general. We will table these issues for now since we do not have enough information about the problem and how to fix it. Julie made notes of these questions and will look into them.

Deferred to discuss over email. Background: Connie is looking at changing the audience for The ACORN Chronicle to be a donor vehicle since it is funded by development. How else do we want to communicate with faculty, staff and students who typically read the ACORN Chronicle. ACTION ITEM: All think about new communication vehicles for us to reach faculty, staff and students who formerly received the ACORN. Additional question: who and what is the message that the RSC would like to have put forward. And to whom? Sue notes that several groups are being asked for input on this question.

Don’t forget to use it – if you have questions, ask Julie for help.

Alerts page: Melinda met with Mary Aquila about this who agreed to update it and is considering converting the Alert Services & RSS Feeds to a LibGuide. She will send out the draft for review when completed. Will use PsycInfo as the demo database for a slideshow tutorial about how to set up alerts.

Careers page: under Getting Help with Research. Mary has updated the links and discovered that the VU Career Center is not pointing to anything in the Heard Library, though there is a page that mentions some books and journals, but no links. Three options were presented. Sara Manus is on a committee in Blair that is working with the campus Career Center. She will bring this up at their next meeting on May 4th. Discussion about how to approach this and options. Sue suggests that it needs to be discussed at Library Council if there is interest here in this Committee for something more expansive. Sue suggests that representatives from this group investigate what is being offered by the other schools. Melinda will tell Mary to not prioritize this project and Sara will make sure that Cindy Funk is aware of what we have.

Demonstrated Central’s Instruction statistics and its maneuverability and filters. Will do a Brown Bag session on this. They find it easier to track instruction statistics for the monthly report. They used to use a paper notebook.

Have also created surveys for First Year Writing Seminar feedback forms and some have embedded in their LibGuides. Instruction librarians can customize your questions for their courses, so specific learning outcomes can be addressed. Librarians can then send the link for compiled results to the faculty member. Vanderbilt has a discount so it is not expensive to use.

We now have LISA through CSA and it will be added to the AtoZ list. Any other announcements, please send them via e-mail to the group.
