- Database descriptions in MetaLib (Jodie & Sue – 20 minutes)
- Report on the last Reference & Instruction Forum (Sue – 15 minutes)
- QuickSets for Primo update and planning (Sue – 15 minutes)
Minutes: Melinda Brown
Committee members attending: Chris Benda, Melinda Brown, Sue Erickson, Leslie Foutch, Jodie Gambill, Teresa Gray, Stephen Jordan, Cynthia Kutka, Kitty Porter, Robert Rich, Flo Wilson. Also attending: David Carpenter, Bill Hook, Mary Beth Blalock.
1. A-Z Journal List (Kitty Porter) Kitty showed us the Category feature – journals are listed by subject (Ex-Libris subjects). She then showed us the Vendor tab and the Locate tab. You may use Locate to combine Vendor & Category information.
The task force needs comments on the A-Z journal listing. Please send these to Kitty. The URL is: http://sfx.library.vanderbilt.edu/sfxtst3/a-z/default
2. DB descriptions in MetaLib (Jodie Gambill) Jodie started by showing how the database entries look in MetaLib. They will actually be accessed through Primo.
Question: How do these relate to the QuickSets? Answer: They are different. Jodie couldn’t show us because this is not set up yet, but eventually will be.
Question: Who will do the work of assigning descriptions, subjects, etc.? Answer: At the Reference & Instruction forum, people expressed desire for greater level of control. Sue asked the group what level of control we thought we might want to have. Discussion ensued. LITS will still enter subscription information and proxy information.
Question: Can vendor technical support information be put into the record for public services staff? This would be especially helpful on the evenings and weekends. Answer: Probably.
Question: Do we want this level of control? Answer: A tentative yes. LITS will provide training on the software. In addition to training, policy decisions need to be put in place for multi-/interdisciplinary subjects.
Jodie indicated that Primo was offering training in December.
Question: Before we talk about training, have we made the decision to go forward with this? Shouldn’t we look at how it will look in Primo? Who will make the decision? Answer: Probably the Strategy & Planning Council will decide.
3. QuickSets for Primo (Sue Erickson)
Sue handed out a list of proposed QuickSets. She mentioned that these would primarily be the “Key Databases”, more of less, since there’s a limit of 5 databases.
Sue asked for a group to come up with the lists for the remaining topics. We determined that there would be a representative in each library that coordinates lists that still needed to be done. Sue will look at the unassigned topics, such as General, Biographical, etc.
Library coordinators: Kitty Porter – Science & Engineering, Biomedical Melinda Brown – Central Chris Benda – Divinity Cynthia Kut – Management (will add a general “Business” category) Stephen Jordan – Law
Questions/Thoughts - Which databases “play nice” with each other? - What about databases with user limits? - Are QuickSets for the “general” user?
Jodie will send out a list of databases with user limits in case that affects which databases the library wants to list with the QuickSets.
4. Reference & Instruction Forum update (Sue Erickson)
a. The last Reference & Instruction Forum discussion was a presentation by Chris Benda on bibliographic management software. A Task Force came out of the meeting. The first thing that will happen are two Train the Trainer workshops. i. Endnote training is scheduled for November 29th, 5-6:30pm. ii. Zotero training is also happening. It is not yet scheduled. Contact Amy Dumouchel, Eli Moody or Aama Nahuja if you’re interested in this training.
5. Other business
There is a new exhibit in Special Collections through the end of February, “Edward Emerson Barnard: Stargazer”.
