Agenda:
- Peabody's course guides (Leslie)
- DiscoverLibrary:
- EndNote in e-classroom (Sue & Chris)
- Other?
- What's happening around the libraries/departments?
Minutes: Jodie
1. Peabody's course guides (Leslie). Leslie showed us Peabody's new course guides. There are five total - one for each Peabody department. The goal of the guides is to provide seamless research - a "one-stop shop" for the resources needed to pursue research in that subject area. They've received great feedback from the students so far. They later hope to provide podcasts for course tutorials using Camtasia.
Other related items:
- The IM reference trial has been very successful so far. The "Ask George" service uses Meebo, which can be embedded directly in their webpages.
- They have completed a video tutorial on PsycInfo; one on InfoTrac is coming soon.
2. DiscoverLibrary (Sue)
- Training recap.
- What did we think about the recent training sessions?
- Both Science and Management had significant portions of their staff that could not attend due to scheduling conflicts. Music enjoyed the training and thought it was useful. Sue will send a list of training attendees from each library so that directors will know who was able to go and who might need/want to attend a possible future session that didn't attend this one.
- Could the handouts from the training be posted somewhere for download? Julie said she would post them in the Primo OAK course for now. (If you or others do not have access to the course, let Julie know and she can add you.)
- Are there other training needs that were not covered in the recent training sessions?
- A full hour on just the e-Shelf would be useful.
- What did we think about the recent training sessions?
- Quicksets update.
- Dale still has a few quicksets to enter, and some small things need to be cleaned up in the drop-down menu. Sue encouraged everyone to check their subject's quickset for accuracy.
- A concern was raised about how some databases will not work at times within a quickset. For example, while searching in the Psychology quickset, PsycInfo might not work. This would cause a difference in the number and kind of results, which is not a good thing when doing instruction. Julie clarified that it has to do with the connection to the server at the moment of the search, not with the quickset itself. If too many people hit the same database at once, it may time out rather than prolong the search time. It was suggested that we draft some "best practices" for DiscoverLibrary instruction.
- Review About DiscoverLibrary text.
- The database list needs to be updated to reflect the most recently added quicksets.
- How do we address the databases that do not currently work in DiscoverLibrary (MetaLib)? Should we include, or link to, a list of major databases that aren't included? A subgroup was formed to explore options that would address this concern. Members are Jodie, Kitty, Cynthia, and Amy.
- The text in the "About DiscoverLibrary" box is geared toward getting constructive comments. Thus, it was suggested that the first part of the second sentence in the third paragraph be revised, from "Not all databases work in DiscoverLibrary" to "Not all databases are included in DiscoverLibrary".
- Can the comments be posted to the Primo OAK course? Sue will check with Jody. (Update: The link to the Test Pilot feedback administration page was sent to the committee via email.)
3. EndNote in e-classroom (Sue & Chris). EndNote 11 is installed on all the Electronic Classroom computers. There has been one request to teach a session on EndNote so far; Chris has some upcoming classes using it as well. EndNote will stay there until the end of the term. RefWorks was brought up; it is very popular among incoming faculty and students from other institutions that used it. A rep came last fall to talk to us about it, but we put all decision-making on hold. Sue will talk with Julie about a possible trial.
4. What's happening around the libraries/departments?
- Peabody: 1,122 students instructed since July. Out of 309 Peabody seniors, 213 have taken the iSkills assessment.
- Central: Jared started this month. They are about to try out LibStats. They are using a new online instruction statistics form created by Melinda in Zoho until a local solution is implemented by LITS. Some of the other library representatives expressed an interest in having such a resource. A group was formed to talk about the possibility of a system-wide instruction statistics database. Members include Sue, Melinda, Kitty, Leslie, Cynthia, Jodie, and Tao You (LITS).
- Management: They are using LibStats to record service desk questions. Hilary is on a new committee headed by the Dean of the Business School to plan for a new building. Earplugs are becoming popular; they have a basket of them at the service desk. They are getting ready for Business Boot Camp; there will be sessions on research in the real world and need ideas for databases that are free to the public (send ideas to Cynthia).
- Science: There is a search committee in place for the new Outreach Librarian position. All Zone models are still up if we want to come see them.
- Music: Several staff members are traveling to conferences (Holling, Steven, Sara). Holling is also going to Uganda to meet with Balikoowa for the Global Music Archive.
