Discover Library Mapping Project Team

Summary/Abstract

Our implementation of DiscoverLibrary, based on Primo by Ex Libris, involves a continual process of adding new resources in order to address a broader scope of the library’s collection. The addition of new resources involves a detailed process of defining rules for the indexing and display of records from each resource. This project team analyzes the metadata involved with each new resource and develops appropriate mapping rules for index and display.

Timeline

Jan 2008 and ongoing. The need for this project team will continue until the responsibilities are transferred elsewhere

Statement of Need

DiscoverLibrary is positioned as one of the major access points for our resources. In order to meet its function as a broad discovery interface, the library will continually add new collections and resources to its scope. Each of these resources requires detailed work to develop mapping rules for presentation and display. This group includes a group of metadata specialists that have been trained in the concepts and tools involved with the underlying Ex Libris Primo software. Some of the resources addressed by the group have included:

  • Global Music Archive
  • Congressional Serial Set
  • DiscoverArchive
  • Art in the Christian Tradition

This project team will deal with such issues as:

  • Analyzing the metadata extracted from a new resource and gaining an understanding for how each field has been used, based both on any existing application profiles and on practical knowledge of the source resource
  • Developing mapping rules into the Primo PNX (Primo Normalized XML) that optimally represent the resource for indexing and display.
  • Assessing and refining as needed the mapping rules that have been created for any of the existing DiscoverLibrary Resources.
  • Developing rules for the generation of facets that will be consistent with the way that they are presented for other resources in DiscoverLibrary.
  • Analyzing and refining the policies that control the de-duplication of records and FRBR groupings for new and existing resources.

Project Champion/owner

The project owner is the Metadata Committee, which will coordinate with other committees as needed.

Project leader/coordinator

Mary Charles Lasater.

Documentation and Reporting

The project leader will report project activities and progress to the Metadata Committee and will inform the committee of its accomplishments regarding each resource. Other Personnel involved/required. The project team will consult with other library staff members as needed. For each new resource, the project team is expected to consult extensively with the key personnel involved with that resource to ensure that its metadata is optimally represented in DiscoverLibrary. The Metadata Committee will facilitate communications with appropriate personnel if needed.

Assessment

The work of this committee will be tested in the staging server of DiscoverLibrary and evaluated by library personnel prior to implementation on the production DiscoverLibrary server. Metadata, DLSC, Research Services and other groups will review new resources.
