Metadata Committee meeting minutes: 11/28/2005
- Agenda: Demo of the Global Music Archive (Gick)
Members present: Nancy Boggess-Korekach, Marshall Breeding, Zora Breeding, Eileen Crawford, Catherine Gick, Teresa Gray, Mary Charles Lasater, Linda Tesar, Pete Wilson, Roberta Winjum. Absent: Annette Williams. Guest: Ann Ercelawn
- Catherine Gick gave a presentation on the Global Music Archive. So far, the database consists only of field recordings from Uganda. She showed us the database interface and gave us hand-outs of the workforms used for the descriptions of the recordings. She and Music faculty conferred on the structure and content of the forms. Students are taking the information from the forms and inputting it into the DBtext database that Marshall created for this purpose. There is some controlled vocabulary used, but LC subject headings are not always useful for this project. There are some photographs included with the recordings and these will have to be digitized and have metadata sheets done for them as well.
- After the demonstration we discussed what the role of our Committee should be in respect to the projects that we have been looking at. Some suggestions were:
- act as a consulting body
- assist in the metadata creation
- become more active in grant writing (although Marshall pointed out that there are other staff in OUL who are already familiar with this and available to give assistance)
Further discussion of this will be continued in future meetings.
- Roberta asked for suggestions on what other databases or digital projects the Committee would like to see. The following were suggested:
- ETD's (Electronic Theses and Dissertations)
- E-Space
- Art collections
- TV News Archive
Marshall agreed to do the session on the TV News Archive at our next meeting and Nancy will do a session on ETD's at the meeting after that.
- Roberta suggested that we set up a Project Team that will discuss more detailed issues of Acorn and cataloging. The committee members agreed that such a Project Team should include both public and technical services staff. Pete volunteered to serve and it was suggested that Nancy also be involved. Mary Charles's name was also mentioned. Roberta will take other suggestions via email and she will write up a draft of the charge for this Project Team.
- Roberta reminded the Committee that the Java Workflows Open House will be held tomorrow and staff are encouraged to attend. Nancy reminded everyone that this is not a training session, but just a look at the new client and that there has not yet been a date set to begin implementation or training.
- Next meeting will be Dec. 12th, 9:00am. in the Electronic classroom. Marshall Breeding will do a presentation on the TV News Archive.
