Guests: Paul Gherman
- Paul Gherman spoke to us about Sirsi's strategic planning and this began a discussion of the issue of where our online catalog and resources fit into the greater scheme of things, especially in regard to the Google-ization of America.
- Paul also addressed the issue of how the library fits into the escalating use of course management systems such as OAK. How can the library be a part of that? How can our committee contribute? He pointed out three possible roles for the library:
- Contibuting to ease of use.
- Maximizing functionality.
- User education.
No conclusions were drawn and the discussion will be continued in future meetings.
- Marshall Breeding demonstrated the Ecclesiastical Source for Slave Societies database that he created to archive and make available some 30,000 images that Spanish Professor Jane Landers had taken of parish churches' records in Cuba. Marshall described the steps he took to create the database, the metadata and the web interface. The committee will use this example to look at how other resources can be either incorporated into the library environment or set up as separate resources.
- Roberta reported that Celia, Julie and Suellen are heading up efforts to provide training for the new Workflows Java client. We will need to assign someone from our committee to help with this.
- Next meeting will be Nov. 7th, 9:00am in the GLB e-Classroom.
