Metadata Committee meeting
Monday Aug. 18, 2008, 9:00 a.m.
Divinity Library Seminar Room
Present: Marshall Breeding, Nancy Boggess-Korekach, Zora Breeding, Ronee Francis, Mary Charles Lasater, Steven Nordstrom, Bill Walker, Pete Wilson, Roberta Winjum, and Dale Poulter
- Special guest: Dale Poulter attended this weeks meeting to share information from DiscoverLibrary Implementation Project team. The task of mapping databases to DiscoverLibrary is being handed off to the Metadata Committee.
- The four collections to be added to DiscoverLibrary are:
- DiscoverArchive (previously known as VU e-Archive)
- Art in the Christian Tradition
- Global Music Archive
- Readex Serial Set
- The process:
- Identify the collection to be added
- Map elements from each collection. Each collection will be different.
- Define the fields in each collection
- Determine which of the fields should display
- Determine what should be in the index
- The process will be complete once this normalization procedure is complete.
- Results of discussion:
- Even though some collections can have datasets defined separately, it is best to have a single pipe for simplicity.
- A Mapping Team was suggested to include Mary Charles (Chair), Ronee Francis (DiscoverArchive), Chris Benda (Art in the Christian Tradition), Steven Nordstrom (Global Music), Nancy Boggess-Korekach, and a possible consultant for the Readex records.
- DiscoverLibrary is a discovery tool and even though a faceting feature is available the Mapping Team will not try to re-create the native interfaces but use the metadata in the best possible way.
- Question: Is there a way to see if patrons are clicking out of DiscoverLibrary to special databases?
- Next meeting will be September 22nd.
