- Changes to OCLC-MARC Format in August 2009 (Zora)
The recent upgrade to the Acorn required several changes to the format policies and only the MARC fixed field changes were included for existing SD customers. We discussed the need to update the variable fields. Nancy explained about all the tables and decisions that have to be made to import, display and index records that use the new values. OCLC is planning to implement the changes later this month, but we load MARC records from many vendors so we do not know when we will start seeing these values. Nancy will start the update process by sending a spreadsheet for the MARC values. Jake will look at the music format for possible specific needs. Zora is going to ask Ann Ercelawn to look at the Holdings format. Mary Charles will take a look at changes to the authorities format.
- Syndetics TOC’s & Links for Discover Library (Roberta)
Jody Combs is considering replacing our current Amazon information with a new product that is being tested by Syndetics. The group had questions about how this would overlap with the TOC’s that are supplied (purchased) by Marcive and loaded into Acorn. Would this info be searched like that on DL and if so, would bibliographic records with both Marcive 505’s and these be redundant? Would the link to Amazon remain or be replaced. What type of records (Academic? Or?) are these Syndetics record 505’s. Are summaries and reviews included? Would these be included in the searching available on DL?
- DL Mapping/Test update (Mary Charles)
- The Serial Set records were loaded and Test was reindexed this past weekend. Please take a look at the test server and make comments. Several representatives of the Mapping Project Team (Mary Charles, Tao, Jodie Gambill, Dale Poulter) met with Larry Romans, Frank Lester, Brian Boling and Teri Bante last week and that group did no see any ‘show stopper’ issues with the current Serial set records.
- There is a new Geographic facet from both Acorn records and GMA records. Please look at this and see if you see problems with this.
- At the request of Jake for the music librarians, we have made the 240 uniform title display. The display will be limited to the detailed view because the DLPG group felt it was confusing on the brief display. Please take a look and see if we need to add brackets to the full view.
- We have also made the ISBN and the music publisher number display (028). Dale is working on the label for the 028 field.
- We have mapped some of the item types that show in the Acorn drop downs to the Genre facets so that CD, LP, etc. are more easily accessible. Some of the choices of terms for that may need to be fine-tuned. Metadata Committee members were very pleased with this and thought it could be expanded to other formats that we have in our item records.
- Mary Charles removed the special rules that allowed for MeSH and LCSH terms to display together in the Topic facet. Ex Libris has provided a system change that takes care of that. Our topic terms now display without all being in capital letters.
- Big Heads Task Force (Roberta) Roberta is taking part in a task force appointed in follow up to the LC report to look at current cataloging and ‘quality’. The scope is still being determined. The group is working by phone conferencing.
- Update on Landers / Gomez Ecclesiastical Records for Slave Societies resource (Marshall)
Marshall is working with this British Library grant to enhance the minimal metadata to include civil records that are being added from Quibdo Colombia. The original records were from churches in Cuba. The database deals with the overall topic of the migration of people because of the slave trade.
- Update on Helguera Grant (Roberta) The grant has been submitted. There is a prototype of about 60 records. Molly has been working on the metadata. They don’t expect to hear from the grant until next Spring.
