- Marshall Breeding gave a presentation of the Art and Art History Image Collection. The project is a joint project of the Slide Library and the School of Arts and Sciences. The project started out as a library of slides housed in the basement of the Old Gym building. Students had to go there to view the slides on slide trays or projectors. The new database is available to students online through course links in Blackboard. The digitization of the materials and the creation of the metadata is done by Slide Library staff. The database is a DBText database that Marshall created and it is based on Visual Resource Association input standards. Existing records were imported into the new database and new records are created directly in the DBText database. Each record has item information, source and copyright information, and housekeeping information such as record key, date created, etc. The database is not currently available to the public because of the complicated copyright issues involved. But the database could be expanded for use by other colleges on campus. Staffing, however, would be a problem. This database could be incorporated into a product such as ExLibris' Primo product and much discussion followed on this idea.
- After Marshall's presentation there was much more discussion about how this Committee could be involved in making the many databases we have seen more available and advertised within the Vanderbilt Library community and beyond. This will be discussed further in next week's meeting.
- Roberta announced that she will work on the charge for the ETD project team and send it out to the Committee members.
- Next meeting will be Feb. 20th, 9:00am. Roberta will give a presentation on the VU E-Archives and a further discussion of the Committee's role with the many digitization projects that we have seen.
