Present: Marshall Breeding, Zora Breeding, Ronee L. Francis, Mary Charles Lasater, Bill Walker, Pete Wilson, Roberta Winjum, Nancy Boggess-Korekach.
- The group discussed an interest in learning more about where metadata-related issues stand with Connie Dowell, new library dean. The decision was to invite her to a meeting sometime in the future.
- Update on the OCLC Numbers Project Team (Zora)
This project team experienced some confusion about the project scope, regarding whether it was to update Acorn by adding the OCLC number or to update OCLC to add Vanderbilt’s holdings symbol for all titles in our collection. The current plan is to do both parts: a reclamation project (OCLC’s term for setting holdings), as well as the Acorn update.
- Part 1: Dale has the file of approximately 300,000 records ready to send to OCLC. They will return OCLC numbers back for us to add to the 035 in Acorn.
Zora will check on the status of that part of the project. She will also remind the CAT team about issues related to working with these 300,000 records in Acorn while the project is underway.
- Part 2: Zora will reconvene the committee to decide about what to send for the reclamation project. Zora mentioned that the reclamation project will not create any new records in OCLC if a match is not found, and this will be a consideration for the project team.
- Some discussion followed about whether there is a more effective way to ensure that our holdings are updated in OCLC in the future. The decision was to wait until we have statistics from the reclamation project to indicate how often our current manual process misses these. Once we know the magnitude of the problem, we can determine the best solution. Zora will also check with the Women’s Resource Center about their current practice for updating holdings in OCLC.
- OCLC policy restriction on commercial use of bib records
- Discussion centered on how this policy affects Vanderbilt library. The conclusion was that the policy does not disadvantage us, but it is anti-open access, and this makes it controversial. Roberta Winjum is a member of an ARL Ad Hoc Task Force that is reviewing and making recommendations to ARL on the policy.
- Progress on new resources in DiscoverLibrary
- Mary Charles Lasater reported that the Global Music Archive records are now in the test database. The Serial Set records have disappeared in the meantime. The inclusion of DiscoverArchive is hampered by the fact that the OAI for qualified Dublin Core metadata is still being tested. The time frame for when the new content will appear in the production version of DiscoverLibrary is unknown. Hardware failures, software upgrades, and personnel issues, such as vacations, have affected our progress.
- Update on RDA (Pete)
- Pete explained a little about RDA, which is the new replacement for AACR2 to work with Marc and non-Marc formats, and with FRBR and FRAD. It is designed to improve the patron’s ability to find, identify, select and obtain materials. Pete explained that RDA is not concerned with format, which makes it more flexible for new formats. Furthermore, record structure/syntax is not a feature of RDA; it can be mapped to Marc/ISBD if desired. Thus, records can still look similar to the way they do now. Testing of RDA is scheduled to begin this summer, and many questions still remain.
- The next meeting will be at 9 AM on Mon., Jan. 19.
