Ingram’s book scanning project
Bill and Roberta talked about a new book scanning project that Ingram is working on, in partnership with Microsoft in the latter’s effort to compete with Google. Microsoft would scan the books and Ingram would add these to its Lightning Source print-on-demand service. They are interested in partnering with ASERL libraries for the project.
Bill is waiting for a response from Ingram to questions about workflow and whether we would get our books back intact. Bill estimates that there are over 200,000 pre-1923 books at the Annex. Microsoft/Ingram has no concern for whether titles have already been digitized elsewhere. Microsoft is aggressively pursuing licensing with publishers for copyright material.
MyiLibrary http://www.myilibrary.com/company/home.htm
MyiLibrary is Ingram’s digital platform for e-books. They are offering a new product within this platform that involves setting up a deposit account. They would give us the MARC records for free and the first time a user clicked on a title, they could read it with no cost accrued to the library. The second time a title was accessed, the cost of the e-book would be charged against the deposit account. Bill has inquired about their offering an option to purchase a print copy, but this is not currently part of the program. Currently, the e-book price is somewhat higher than the print cost, however perpetual access is granted, so that we would retain access even if we drop out of the program. Bill asked LDC to consider what a pilot project might look like. We currently have a trial for MyiLibrary. Collections Committee representatives can provide information about access to the trial.
Library Access Cards
This issue came up because of a recent situation involving a patron at Peabody who had a visiting scholar card. VUPD has reported having some problems (5 or 6 instances) with individuals who have been given visitor access cards. Tracy will take the issue to CAC for further discussion about procedures for granting vistor scholar cards.
Revised charge for C-SET
The revised charge was approved.
Fines
The Central Library will continue to use the same circulation tables and will continue to charge fines. Divinity will consider maintaining fines in order to provide consistency within the GLB. Other libraries will cease charging fines.
