- Information Literacy update
Melinda Brown summarized the activities of the Committee on Undergraduate Information Literacy (CUIL). The main focus of the committee is to look at projects that address information literacy across campus. A major initiative has been a proposal for a library component of Vanderbilt Visions. The potential session, mandatory for all first year students, would be an introduction to services and resources in the Library and a discussion of how research in college differs from research in high school. A 6-8 minute video which includes faculty and student responses to questions about research may also be a part of this session.
- Cataloging and technical services discussion
Roberta Winjum was invited to the Library Directors Council meeting to discuss the services that Technical Services staff provide to the libraries and to listen to complaints or suggestions voiced by the committee members. Some ideas that were shared included:
- A need for assessment of Technical Services
- A need for more receptivity to change on the part of Technical Services especially in a climate of constant change and in light of changing library priorities.
- A request that Technical Services staff point out inconsistencies in procedures among the libraries.
- A need for better communication with the bibliographers when a requested item is backordered or not available.
- Timely processing and cataloging of materials
- A need for improvements in SFX functionality
- A need for better e-resource processing
Two of the committee members mentioned specific areas of collaboration that they would like to pursue with Technical Services Staff:
- Divinity Library
- Evaluate Ebsco as a serials vendor
- Work with Order Services on moving the ordering from slips back to OS
- Etana
- Music Library
- Explore using OS more regularly for acquisition of materials
Roberta asked about the Inventory that is stored in the Annex, and the response was that no one has time to make any decisions about it and that it is low priority.
The discussion ended with the question "What is Acorn, and what should it contain?".
Roberta was thanked for her willingness to come to this meeting and to listen to the concerns.
- Storage retention of bound journals
John Haar is crunching numbers on space savings if bound journals that are duplicated in JSTOR and other electronic resources were withdrawn. He concluded that the savings in space would not be substantial enough to pursue at this time.
- Digital copiers and security issues (Bill)
Bill Hook will draft a message to the entire library staff regarding this issue
- CAC Update--Tabled
