Agenda

Meeting Notes--Juanita
Absent--Celia

The University's commitment to the First Year Commons is clear, and the Library needs to develop plans for how we can further support the goals of the Commons. The end result of the discussion should be a plan for moving the Library planning forward organizationally. Questions to be addressed include who should be included on the planning team, what is the deliverable for the team and to which committee should it be delivered, what are the assumptions and the parameters that should guide the teams work, what does the time frame need to be?

Meeting notes

Present: Sue Erickson, David Carpenter, Bill Hook, Flo Wilson, Tracy Primich, Martin Cerjan, Holling Smith-Borne, Juanita Murray

Fines

There was a discussion on how to handle the tally of distribution and project income for the coming years with the elimination of fines. We will need to make adjustments in our income versus operating expense reduction. The elimination of fines affects Central more than the other libraries.
Some libraries may need to consider applying for exception requests. There are two types of exception request: recurring or one-time. Most exceptions are recurring expenses. Changing income expectations should be evaluated.

University Librarian Search

There are 19 people on the University Librarian Search Committee, composed of faculty, staff, and library representation. Dennis Hall will be coming to talk tomorrow at the Commons for questions from the Library staff. Charge for the committee will be presented. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Library staff can also submit nominations.

24-Hour Service

Tracy has let go security staff and hired someone who is more stable. She would like to have the position as a regular employee especially during peak times of 1:00-2:00 a.m. This service is highly valued by undergraduates. She will survey students to determine what students are using the library. This will help determine appropriate staffing. This service has been used as a study hall, and there is a lot of demand for computers at night.

First Year Commons

Planning will be in place in September 2008. Library needs to be supportive of this. Sue Erickson will create a project team to discuss the implications further. She will draft the committee charge and will be looking for people to volunteer for the team. There was a discussion of money, etc. for the project.

Announcements

The Peabody Library Director search did not come to a successful conclusion. Final word on how the interim responsibility will be handled has not yet been determined.
If you want holiday cards, contact Celia Walker with the number needed.
