- Security Concerns for the Libraries
Most of the meeting time was spent discussing security issues with representatives from campus police. Several concerns were raised including:
- 1) Library users leaving their possessions unattended, especially laptops. Library staff should continue to remind library users not to do this and use the “If I Were A Thief Your Stuff Would be Gone!” handout.
- 2) Third-party security officers that are employed by the libraries or schools. Campus Police do not routinely walk through schools and rely on third party security officers to be a presence. These sub-contractors are under the jurisdiction of campus police and should be notified when a school or library employs a sub-contractor.
- 3) Library access cards vs. Vanderbilt photo IDs. A few library users with library access cards have used their cards to verify with campus police that they should be allowed to loiter on campus. Anyone on campus must have a reason for being on campus and can not stay on campus for extended periods of time. Library access cards should not be used in this way.
- 4) Library users “camping” overnight in libraries that offer extended hours, T. Primich reported that she occasionally has a problem with library users sleeping in the Science and Engineering Library. She has called campus police to get information about these users. Library staff should always feel free to call campus police for additional information about a library user.
The VU Alert system was also discussed. T. Primich asked what the lag time is between campus notification and when a phone call is made to people signed up for the notification system. A. Atwood responded that it used to take 20-25 minutes but they are using a new vendor. Now it should take less than a minute.
A. Atwood indicated that campus police is assessing the security presence on campus and will visit all of the libraries in the next three weeks. After the visits, a recommendation will come from his department to F. Wilson.
- Announcements:
- F Wilson announced that J. Blagojevich will be sending the seating sweep reports to library directors in the next few days. There will be another seating sweep scheduled in April.
- F. Wilson also reported on the University Librarian search. The search committee has not decided on how many candidates to bring to campus. It will most likely be 3 candidates. 5 candidates were brought to campus for confidential preliminary interviews. Full interviews will be in April.
- There are ongoing discussions on NIH compliance. On March 13, there will be a meeting hosted by the Medical Center. R. Winjum, T. Primich, P. Gherman, and Kevin Davis will be attending that meeting.
