Agenda
- Mentorship suggestions for new library directors (Tracy)
Meeting Notes
- Mentorship needs for new directors
- In particular with Tracy's assistance, we identified the need to ensure that a director has a 'mentor' relationship in order to better understand how budgets are managed. We discussed various approaches that directors take to managing both the materials and the operations budgets. We discussed the existence, or not, of shadow budgets beyond edog and ACORN in order to feel comfortable with where budgets stand during the year. A need was also identified of some relationship with a faculty member or two who could provide clues to how the library works. There was brief discussion about an orientation checklist, the several that exist throughout the system now, and the one that the Staff Development Committee will be developing for library-wide orientation.
- Leadership for the CAC and RSC
- In offloading some responsibilities in order to move into the Management Library directorship, Flo was interested in comments, perceptions, etc. about how leadership might be provided for the CAC and RSC, two of the committees she chairs. Questions were raised about the scope of the committees, their general nature and charge, direction. These two groups are seen as information sharing and operational, working on common interests across the libraries' circulation, reserves, reference, and instruction functions. Identifying non-managerial staff to play a leadership role was suggested, one that might be enhanced by being able to offer rewards of some kind.
- Future meetings
- Vacation and conference season begins now. For the next several weeks, two or more directors will be unavailable. The Library Directors Council next meeting will be July 17.
