Agenda

Meet in Divinity Seminar Room 224

Beth will talk about her role and what she does in library development. Please bring questions and knowledge you may have about development issues in the colleges and schools as they relate to library matters.
You might review the distributed report from Steven Nordstrom on his assessment of the Kindle, especially for possible circulation of music books.

Meeting Notes: (Regrets: Lisa)

1. The meeting began by welcoming Hilary Craiglow, interim director of Walker Management Library, to the group.

2. Beth Boord discussed her role in library development and how her position in the Development Office correlates with the goals of the Library. Beth oversees fundraising efforts and donations made to the libraries, and she explained ways in which she works to help the Library raise money for its Strategic Plan by soliciting potential and existing donors. She distributed financial reports showing the breakdown of gifts and payments to the Development and Alumni Relations Office by school, another document differentiating gifts by unrestricted, restricted and endowed funds, and a document outlining the fundraising goals for the next fiscal year. Beth also outlined her overall duties as development officer for the Library and mentioned examples of some recent development work she has done (additional handout). Beth agreed to get back to the group with answers to some questions that were raised, such as “what is the difference between grants and foundations”. Additionally, Celia offered to set up a meeting for those interested in reviewing gifts in kind procedures. *(Any Library that receives gifts in kind above $1,000 should notify Beth so such donors can be added to the Heard Society List.) Beth also mentioned events she is working with the Library on, such as the lecture by Arthur Demarest and exhibit in Special Collections this month, and other future endeavors.

3. Usage of Kindle was discussed. Council members had been given a report on Kindle put together by Steven Nordstrom, which outlined the pros and cons he has experienced with the unit. Tracy commented that the Kindle in S&E is very popular and checked out continually; Hilary mentioned that Owen has plans to do a pilot test with Kindle, purchasing units for each member of a specified class. The group discussed the assorted pros and cons associated with Kindle and possible plans for its use in the future.
