Minutes (Regrets: Sue)
1. Dean Connie Vinita Dowell attended the meeting this week, discussing the purpose of her visit and responding to questions the council had chosen for her. Connie will be making short visits to the library before her start date of March 1, 2009 in an effort to learn more about Vanderbilt and the libraries. She hopes to gain an understanding of our hopes and concerns, to begin developing a relationship with other deans, and to begin working on development projects with Beth, among other things. She would like the Library Council to be involved in more discussions about future planning for the Library. She expects many positive changes to come over the next couple of years, and will rely heavily on members of the council to work with her on this. She stressed the importance of open communication within the group and across the library system as a whole. She plans to have a retreat for Library Council members in late January to begin moving forward with planning efforts.
2. The group discussed the need to establish a library policy and provide guidelines related to bibliographic content in Acorn and DiscoverLibrary. Council members were asked to review a document distributed by Bill and consider how to proceed with addressing such a policy. This is to be discussed at a future meeting, in early December.
3. Announcements:
- David will send the ARL survey information to the group. The results have been put into a database. We may want to consider using some titles from this database.
- Beth announced that the Delbert Mann materials have been appraised at $1.2 million, mentioning this as a good opportunity to aid in further development.
- Beth will follow up with council members in the near future about gifts-in-kind procedures.
- Jody announced that some of the expected enhancements to student systems such as OAK, the student registration system, and others have been delayed somewhat as a result of the current economic climate.
