1. Announcements:
- The 2009/2010 Guide to Libraries is in. Sue showed samples to LC. This year the URL’s were removed from the print version but they will be available on a web page that corresponds to the Guide. Sue thanked Henry Shipman for working on the design, Robyn for coordinating, and other groups involved with revisions and design. Contact Sue if you need copies.
- Bill noted that the new copier/scanners have been delivered. Patron use instructions are expected to be posted by the time of Fall Orientation.
- Dean Dowell shared a number of updates with Council:
- Painting and carpeting is underway on the 2nd floor (Spec. Coll / Dean’s Office)
- Special Collections is working on a Twain exhibit Twain & Twang, in collaboration with other city-wide organizations (Nashville Public Library, Frist Center, Cheekwood and others). An exhibit showcasing some of our original materials will run in Special Collections from January through June, 2010, and will then travel to San Diego State.
- The New York alum event was well-attended and the dean met some nice prospective donors.
- Dean Dowell had an eventful trip to DC. She served on a panel for the Institute of Museum and Library Studies where she discussed possible grants on library leadership; she attended meetings at the Newseum, discussing extensive collaborations. She also met with potential donors and CLIR President Charles Henry. She chairs CLIR’s Academic Library Advisory Committee. They will convene a number of panels related to library leadership. Council was asked to send her recommendations of provosts who might participate on these panels.
- Dean Dowell has met with various deans, learning about what they are doing. She also continues to meet with others on campus, including various departments and student groups, discussing ways to integrate the library across the university. She meets with the Provost this week as well.
- She attended the Alexander Heard Memorial Service and will send sympathy cards to the family.
- Celia is collaborating with Chalene Helmuth on an “Art Crawl” for the beginning of the semester. If directors would like to display student artwork at their library for the event, please contact Celia.
- Bill will add information about the recently acquired Patterson Collection to the Staff News; an Acorn Chronicle article is expected in the next edition (Spring 2010) once the collection is unpacked and can be assessed and photographed.
2. Provost’s Address to Library Staff: Council reopened last week’s discussion of the Provost’s talk to staff at the July 20 All-Staff Meeting. Staff appreciated having the Provost attend and found his comments helpful in their understanding of how the university and library work together currently and how we can find additional ways to efficiently work together in the future. His message was clear that the university will be much more united than in the past, and in that same light we can expect to chart a course for the library system as a whole as we look for ways to move in concert with the university. Ann Marie Owens has published a myVU article about the meeting and the Provost’s strategic vision for the library. Dean Dowell asked Council to send ideas for other professional development speakers for future staff meetings.
3. Center for Teaching Materials Processing: Because of recent changes at the Center for Teaching, Tech Services will now be ordering and cataloging materials for the center. The holding code “CFT” will appear on these materials.
4. Update on Serials Audit: Bill has an interim report on the serials audit as of August 1. He has been impressed with the progress made to date and expects we will save money as a result of the audit. January 1 is the deadline for a final report. In the meantime, mid-August is the deadline for staff to communicate cancellations to Tech Services. Bill will prepare the final report for the dean’s review and the information will eventually be shared with Library Council.
5. Student wage rates: Lisa distributed a Federal Minimum Wage document that must be posted at each library. She also distributed a listing of student assistant pay rates from across our library system. Directors are asked to send Lisa their respective student wage rates from 08/09 by Wednesday 8/5 so she can bring the list up to date. Dean Dowell asked directors to consider the inconsistencies in student pay and to aim toward a more consistent rate across the system. Dean Dowell also reminded Council that the group previously agreed to put together a student celebration at the end of the academic year; she will seek volunteers.
