Absent: Marshall Breeding; Guest: Paul Gherman
Agenda:
- Vanderbilt Media Archive
- Digital Preservation Initiative
- Update on AlphaSearch
Notes:
- Paul Gherman provided background about events leading to development of the Vanderbilt Media Archive initiative. The short term goals of the initiative may be to develop a more visible web presence for the many multi-media collections the library already supports and to make sure the campus is aware of our role and expertise in this area. The longer term goal may include re-evaluating our infrastructure and procedures related to archiving these types of collections.
Several key stakeholders were identified in the conversation: collections development, metadata, Special Collections, owners of existing collections and projects, among others. Holling Smith-Borne has agreed to head a project to look into these issues. Paul will draft a proposed charge.
- Jody turned to the digital preservation initiative and noted that in many ways it was related to the media archive issue. We are still in early stages of forming a project(s) related to this initiative. Background reading and reference materials have been posted to the DLSC web site. Many of the same key stakeholders were identified, along with Sue Davis from Preservation and the digital collections archivist, when appointed. In the meantime, the DLSC could take on the task of further refining the inventory of existing digital collections provided by Sue.
- Jody provided an update on the AlphaSearch project. Service pack 4 is to be applied to our staging server soon and we will continue testing patches and fixes. The general feedback about the project is still positive, while there are also a number of reports of specific problems.
