Agenda:
Review recommendations from DiscoverLibrary production group.
Notes:
On October 28, 2008, the Digital Library Steering Committee discussed the recommendations of the DiscoverLibrary production group for revisions to the DiscoverLibrary user interface. The committee approved the following changes that had been made to the version on the test server. [Note: due to an unexpected hardware failure on the production server on October 30, the test server has been reconfigured to serve as our production server. Consequently, examples of the changes to the user interface are not currently available. These will be reinstated in the near future.]
- Turned off the automatic search when switching between tabs.
- Reduced the search parameter options in the simple search box. All options are still available in the advanced search box (usability showed that most users didn’t look for options on a simple search screen).
- The font size will be increased for “New Search” and “Advanced Search” links.
- Phrase “Top Level” changed to “Show only” in the first facet.
- Previously duplicated top level facet links (“available” and “online”) reduced to single instance in left hand facet panel (removed from top of results display).
- Increase the font size for the drop down list in the search box.
The changes above will be moved into production in the near future.
The DLPG also asked for responses to the changes below. These will not be implemented at this time:
- Re-ordering information within each facet by alphabetical order.
DLSC felt that this might be confusing since only the top 15 items in a facets category are displayed. The order will remain as is for now (ordered by number of results for each facet item).
- The acorn link made more visible by using an Acorn graphic in the DL page header.
This item needs further discussion by RSC and other stakeholders.
[Again note: due to an unexpected hardware failure on the production server on October 30, examples of the changes to the user interfaces are not currently available. These will be reinstated in the near future.]
- This is a new test view that still allows users to search the entire local repository, but also has a new tab that only searches Acorn records:
