Regrets – Kathy Smith

The committee members introduced themselves to Jared Ingersoll, the new Head of Collection Development in Central.

Bill reported that we have multiple Ebscohost administrator accounts. He would like to consolidate the 24 product accounts that we have currently. He believes this may be causing an incomplete set of statistics from our Ebscohost databases into Scholarly Stats. If there are concerns about consolidating, let him know. Management mentioned to him earlier that they need to have admin access to the Business Source Premier database. Of the 8 admin accounts we had, all admin passwords had expired. He will keep everyone updated on this process.

The library currently uses the OVID interface for PsychInfo and Psycharticles. Mary Beth had mentioned before she left that there was an interest in looking at other interfaces. Jared mentioned that Sue Widmer had started this process in Central. Since there is system-wide interest in this issue, Julie Loder will work with Sue to set up trials. CSA and Ebsco also offer interfaces.

Sage would again like us to consider their Sage Premium package. This would give us online access to 284 titles if we were to buy in. To retain print would cost 25% more on top of the charge for the electronic. UTK has been pressing for a better deal. Sage is now offering to wave the extra cost for the print titles for 2008 only if we were to buy the package. We would need to renegotiate for 2009. Bill reported that there wasn’t much enthusiasm the first time around, but asked if we would like to consider this again. There was some interest and Bill agreed to send the financial information out again.

Management is interested in a trial for mapping software. Bill mentioned that in Mary Beth’s notes there is a reference to a previous trial that garnered little feedback. However, since most of the Management questions seem to be coming from undergraduates in the Managerial Studies program, they would like to have another trial. Julie Loder will set up the system wide trial for Demographics Now and Simply Maps.

Bill described Ingram’s new MyLibrary product. MARC records are added to the catalog based on a predefined set of criteria. For instance, it can be a retrospective collection to avoid duplication with current approval profiles. Upon the second viewing within the same session of the record in the catalog, the purchase of the e-book would be initiated. A view is defined as the user click on an interior page. Clicking on the TOC or the cover will not count. Jared pointed out that MyLibrary has a full-text search interface and the results provide links to the interior pages. Searching this way could increase the number of purchases. However, going through Acorn would keep this from happening too often. Other factors are that the user must be on campus or be coming through the proxy server for the click to count. We would retain access to the titles we purchased for an annual maintenance fee of 20% of the purchase price. If we ever opted out, they have the means to uniquely indentify the titles needing to be removed from the catalog (non-purchased titles). Right now there is a significant buy-in amount, but Bill is hopeful that we could negotiate a smaller buy-in amount if there is interest in participating. Bill can send a list of the collection. Any amounts not used by patrons could be expended by bibliographers before the year is up by clicking on desired titles.

Mary Ellen reported on most recent large invoice payments. Elsevier/ScienceDirect paid over $1 million. Harrassowitz, Ebsco and Swets are already paid in July by the University, but should as of today show as paid in WorkFlows. Mary Ellen will send an email to fund managers with exact figures.

Bill reminded the group that if anyone is doing serial or periodical reviews, there are some big package deal issues to remember. The Springer deal expires at the end of 2008. This is a good time to consider cancellation of individually paid titles from Springer, but reminded us that the cost of the package deal may increase as a result. Also, cancelling means that the subscription moves from perpetual access to access via the package. The ScienceDirect deal is through 2010, Wiley through 2011 and Emerald through 2009.

Bill reported that the migration of the Database list to Metalib is not actually in the works. There will be a meeting later to discuss the database presentation issue and at that time the subject review can be considered. Roberta announced the she had received the go ahead from Strategy & Planning to purchase VERDE, the ERM product from Ex Libris.

Roberta reported that Technical Services staff is adding VU News podcast to the VU e-archive. She asked if the committee needed to revisit the collection policy. Bill will redistribute the policy and add this to a later agenda.

Lee Ann shared a survey created by Tao You in LITS that includes a list of possible journal titles for cancellation. The faculty member must enter their name on the survey and make a choice for or against cancellation. The feedback will go to an advisory committee and department chairs for final decisions.
