Meeting Minutes July 18, 2006

Present: John Haar, Mary Beth Blalock, Lee Ann Lannom, Mary Prince, Kathy Smith. Absent: Amia Baker, Deborah Broadwater, Carlin Sappenfield, Sue Davis, Catherine Gick, Bill Hook, Mary Ellen Wilson.

1. John updated the group on plans for Java client collection development training. Basic training will cover fund, vendor, and invoice records. Advanced training will deal with creating, adding, deleting, modifying, and duplicating funds. John, Bryan, Bill, and Carlin will serve as trainers and floaters for basic training, and Mary Beth and Lee Ann will be trainers for the advanced classes.

2. Subscriptions to consider for cost-sharing:

Resources for College Libraries. The latest edition of Books for College Libraries is now available as a multi-volume print set, an online edition, or an interactive analysis tool. The committee decided that libraries would probably not make enough use of any of the versions to justify a subscription.

COS Funding Opportunities. The University Division of Sponsored Research currently funds a campus-wide subscription to ResearchResearch, which has a module with information on grants, so we decided that a subscription to Funding Opportunities was not warranted.

Papers Invited. This source presents lists of calls for papers issued by professional bodies. The committee felt that its $2,000 per year cost made it a poor value.

3. The committee reviewed the Heard Library Digital and Unique Collections page and decided to make no changes.

4. John informed the committee of two restricted materials funds that are available to all the libraries. The Miscellaneous Non-Book fund, made up of small donations, can be used for big ticket acquisitions. It currently holds $66,996. The John Poindexter fund is designated for purchases of humanities resources. It currently holds $4,269. Libraries wishing to use the funds should send requests to John.

5. John asked each of the libraries to report on the rate of increase in their approval, periodical, serial, and electronic expenditures for 2005-06.
